Naku Ha! December 2011

People Power or Mob Power
President Benigno Aquino is scaring the Supreme Court that if they do not agree to his decisions, the people will attack them. If the popularity is how to run a country, then, we should not have a court of law. In fact, we should not even have a government. That is what is happening in Somalia. He who has more people and arms get to be government -  for a short time - until another person or group amasses more arms or have more people demonstrate against the sitting government and overthrow them again. Even my friend said that the SC should be afraid of people power. “Gusto ba nilang i-people power sila?” Now, is this any way to run a civilized country?

Loyalty to the People?
President Aquino says that he is only following the people, who elected him. Therefore, the SC should not get in his way of putting reforms to stop corruption the the country. But the loyalty of the SC is to the constitution, not to the people. Not even to the one who appointed them.  The Supreme Court does not get swayed by popularity. Just because they were appointed by Arroyo does not mean they are loyal to Arroyo. Judges are appointed by the incumbent president. How else could it be, hindi ba? If we are going to accuse judges of being loyal to the president that appointed them, huwag na lang tayong mag-appoint, hindi ba?

Credibility
Now, the House of Representatives has threatened to fire one of the judges for plagiarism, which the court has already cleared before. Was there pressure from the top? According to critics, the judge used a judgement from another ruling out of the country. But is it plagiarism or was he just basing his decision on a precedent?

No Need for Ethnics
Now that the Conservatives got their majority, it seems that they do not need the ethnic votes anymore. After appearing in more ethnic events than he probably cared for, Minister of Immigration Jason Kenney has scrapped the family reunification program. Well, actually, he said suspended for two years until the backlog can be cleared. Instead, he now replaced it with the ten-year super visa program. I’ll bet you that suspension will become permanent. he has also stopped approving new caregivers to come to the country. There were less caregivers allowed in Canada in 2010 than in 2009.  Hmmm..bakit kaya?

PNOY should Lead, Not Follow.
President Benigno Aquino is scaring the Supreme Court that if they do not agree to his decisions, the people will attack them. If the popularity is how to run a country, then, we should not have a court of law. In fact, we should not even have a government. PNOY said that the people elected him and that he is only following their wishes.  Isn’t he supposed to lead, not follow?

Impeach the Chiff Justice?
President Aquino says that he is only following the people, who elected him. Therefore, the SC should not get in his way of putting reforms to stop corruption the the country. But the loyalty of the SC is to the constitution, not to the people. Not even to the one who appointed them. There are rumours he plans to impeach the Chief Justice Corona. He better not do that. What if he replaced Corona with somebody else and that person still decides against his actions because they are unconstitutional, what happens then? He loses face. He cannot replace him again. Well, maybe he can. Alam niyo naman sa atin. What if he replaced all of them and the replacements all have the same conclusions as the ones they replaced, lalo na siyang kahiya hiya.

Christmas distraction
It’s Christmas time and the only thing we hear from the government is about Arroyo’s alleged election cheating and / or corruption but nothing concrete. Let us remember that these are only allegations and that a person is innocent until proven guilty. What about economic plans for the Philippines? What about solving the poverty problems of the Philippines. I guess accusing Arroyo of everything including the assassination of the Kennedys and Abraham Lincoln. As long as you keep the Filipinos entertained, they will not notice that they are hungry. Marcos allowed the proliferation of pornographic comics at the beginning of the 80’s after banning them when he declared martial law in the 70’s. PNOY will have to think of another topic once his GMA preoccupation becomes old news.
